WR: Van Der Burgh Blasts A 26.74 50 Breast

Jul 28, 2009  - Craig Lord

Rome 2009, Day 3:

Men's 50m breast semi-finals:

Oleg Lisogor (UKR) claimed the world crown in 27.66 in Melbourne 2007. That would not have made the final in Rome, where lane four was claimed by Cameron Van der Burgh (RSA) in a world record of 26.74. The previous holder, Felipe Silva (BRA) went through in third, on 26.92, behind German Hendrik Feldwhr, on 26.83.

Van der Burgh sighed as he said: "Another race, another world record." Now that he had one, he would go and get "a good night's sleep", his aim tomorrow simple: the gold medal. Lisogor, back in 11th and still battling, set his first best time in seven years: 27.33, faster than he raced to victory in 2007.

Lisogor said: "I was a bit shocked in prelims this morning: 25 people swam faster than I swam two years ago. I don't know how it is possible. Everyone is working hard ... and these swimsuits certainly help." He went off to have a rest, his championships done, his mind on "dancing".
