6 Golds For Lochte; USA Wins Relay & Meet
Dec 16, 2012 - Craig Lord
Istanbul, World Short-Course Championships, Day 5 finals:
Men's 4x100m medley
Matt Grevers (50.00), Kevin Cordes (57.15), Thomas Shields (48.66) and Ryan Lochte (45.22) took gold in 3:21.03 for the victory, granting Lochte his 6th gold in five days and the man of the meet crown with over $50,000 in prize. Katinka Hosszu took the woman of the meet prize (see top earners below).
The US won the meet by an impressive margin:
Lochte already had the crown of six golds - he won them in 2010, when he joined Aussie Brooke Hanson, from 2004, at the top of the pile of most golden swimmers at one championship. Lochte's eight medals also set a record, one gold beyond the seven won by Neil Walker (USA) in 2000 and Lochte's 2010 treasure trove, all prizes handed over to kids in the stands. He'll keep the money.
The silver in the medley relay went to Russians Stanislav Donets (50.10), Viatcheslav Sinkevich (57.54), Nikolay Skvortsov (50.27) and Vladimir Morozov (44.95), in 3:22.86, Australians Robert Hurley (50.44), Kenneth To (57.44), Grant Irvine (50.75) and Tommaso D'Orsogna (46.14) third in 3:24.77.
